The New York Times on an ongoing struggle. Let's discuss!

The crucial relationship between critics and opera producing companies is often difficult (even contentious). Here is another very recent wrinkle in the ongoing struggle between one of  the most powerful opera companies in the world and the press, explored in The New York Times this week - read the article here. Censorship? Prudent concern over image? Comments? (I love to get  feedback about these blog posts.) - BLO Artistic Advisor John Conklin

More on the Met/Opera News story...

BLO Artistic Advisor John Conklin follows up his post from yesterday regarding the continually unfolding story of the Met/Opera News relationship...
Well, that didn't take long.  The mighty Metblinked, retreated, gave in with what appears to be a humiliating defeat. Youcan check out the veritable (and almost instantaneous) avalanche of criticism, reproach, anger, scorn, bitterness, ridicule directed at  Peter Gelb whenthe story hit. …and this just on the New York Times website. Is there more fall-out coming?
Interesting...  the Gelb "censorship" newswas on the front page of The New YorkTimes yesterday but the story of today's retraction was on page 3 of the ArtsSection. It's getting to be like trying to interpret news from theKremlin or psyching out the meaning of where the Russianleaders are standing for the May Day parade. Incidentally, there were many blogcomments on the Soviet-Stalinist tone of the Met pronouncements... as well ascalls for the overthrow/deposition of Comrade Gelb. Boston, MA—General & Artistic Director Esther Nelson today announced that Dan Duro has been appointed Managing Director of Boston Lyric Opera (BLO). Duro joined BLO in 2008 as Producing Director. As Managing Director he will oversee Company-wide operations, along with the execution of BLO’s three annual mainstage productions, Opera Annex, and special events.

“BLO has been fortunate to have Dan Duro as Producing Director for the last four years,” said Nelson. “His proven and excellent ability to oversee and manage complex production and operational challenges offered the opportunity to expand his level of management responsibility. I am pleased to announce his new role as Managing Director, which includes the oversight of daily operations. This will further strengthen the organizational stability of BLO, and allow me to focus more on artistic growth, strengthen community relationships, and realize the financial support necessary to ensure the long term stability of Boston’s major opera company.”

Duro has worked in technical, production, and organizational management of the arts for more than three decades. His prior positions, held at over 13 performing arts companies, include: Production Director at The Santa Fe Opera; Director of Production for Portland Opera, Opera Pacific, the Williamstown Theatre Festival, The Acting Company, and The Shakespeare Theatre; Vice President for Operations at the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts and the Academy of Music in Philadelphia; and Production Manager for Brooklyn Academy of Music.

"Boston Lyric Opera is a company of great depth and breadth; it's been producing great work and is poised for much more,” said Duro. “What gives me the greatest confidence about the future of BLO is Esther Nelson's dedication to upholding the highest artistic standards, and I am pleased to assist her by providing the organizational support that will make this vision possible."

Duro and Nelson are both featured presenters at the 2012 OPERA America conference taking place this week in Philadelphia. OPERA America is the national service organization for opera.

Isabella Stewart Gardner

On May 3rd I got the chance to get out the Isabella Stewart Gardner.  This was my first time there since the opening of the new wing.  The new wing is a much needed improvement over the old wing which is still in use.  Mike, one of the curators of the museum pointed out, that with the creation of the new wing, events and uses of the old from music, dining, and even enterance were all moved over to the new wing.  Be warned though that the do not allow large bags and the use of cameras while in the art galleries.  The new art galleries are impressive in their size and and how they can be customized for different art exhibits.  After looking around in the museum for a bit, I was able to catch one of their concerts in the new Calderwood Hall.  THey have set up the space so that everyone here has a front row seat.  Instead of having the seats go back in rows horizontally, they go vertically.  I was very impressed by the acoustics in the hall as well.  While at the museum, if you get hungry stop on by the G Cafe for a bite.  gardnermuseum.org 280 The Fenway Boston, MA 02115

Lost Train Stations: North Station - I and II

To contact us Click HERE
North and Union Stations, early 1890s.

The original North Station, Causeway street. The old Boston and Lowell depot with its Mansard roofs remains to the left of the new buildings.

Heres' a later view, showing a walkway from the elevated line.

It's taken a while, but I've finally returned to discuss North Union and North Stations. The original station, shown above, combined the old Lowell station with two adjoining buildings to serve traffic from north of Boston and that coming through the Hoosac Tunnel through western Massachusetts. It was built by adding new structures to the existing 1878 Lowell depot in 1893. By this time, most traffic was under the control of the Boston and Maine line. Just as South Station combined traffic that once was served by independent depots, the new North station was a union of formerly independently operating depots in one facility.

Aerial view of the new North Station, with Boston Garden. Also note the elevated tracks in the foreground (BPL).
In 1927-28, the entire edifice was torn down and replaced with a new North Station. Both an elevated line and streetcars connected with the new location, and Boston Garden was built on top of the station. The Hotel Manger was added adjacent to the station in 1930, and was later renamed the Madison.

Here's a Disney-fied version of North Station, free of actual city streets.

And finally, a more realistic view, featuring the Hotel Manger, later re-named the Madison. Note the elevated line leading to Charlestown.

High Schools of Yore.

Boston Trade high school - closed/merged 1978 (City of Boston Archive Flickr photo group).

This is my second school post recently, this one featuring 20th century high schools that disappeared. In recent decades, so many schools have been closed that it's hard to keep track. These high schools operated during a more stable time, yet they too came and went.

Like many of these school, a single-sex institution, Boston Trade featured hands-on training over academics. I understand they had a particularly good automotive repair program.

Boston Trade, Parker street, Roxbury (Mission hill). Note Wentworth Institute across the street.

Trade School for Girls. I didn't know this one existed. Girl's Trade supposedly lasted until 1973, although I never heard of it at the time. I've seen reference to a practical nursing program.

Trade High for Girls, Hemenway street, on the edge of the Fenway.

Practical Arts high school (1900-1940). This school seems to have been for students who found academic work unappealing. Thus, the 'practical.' Remember, at the time, very few students went on to college.

Practical Arts high, school at lower right. Note Dudley street at the top and Warren to the left. This would later become Girl's Latin.

The old Normal school was a preparatory high school for future teachers, typically girls. As teaching became professionalized, training extended to college, and the Boston Teacher's College was founded. When Girl's Latin moved out of the South End, it came here, adjacent to the Teacher's College. When the teacher's college was expanded, Girl's Latin was squeezed out of their home.

Note: Commenter Deb shared this link with information about the various moves of Girls's Latin/Latin Academy.

Girl's Latin school, Huntington avenue and Longwood street.

While I remember Boston Trade high school, the High School of Commerce was closed in 1954. I think we can assume a focus on office skills for this school - typing, shorthand and basic accounting skills were tickets to an office job at the time.

By the time I was in school, English High had replaced Commerce on Avenue Louis Pasteur. English, like the nearby Girl's Latin, would later be bumped from the building. Needless to say, Boston Latin school went nowhere.

Mechanic Arts high school had a contentious life. The headmaster saw it as a feeder school for M.I.T., while the school department wanted to produce factory workers. In time, the school would be renamed Boston Technical high school, and become a so-called exam school. When I attended in the late 1960s-early 1970s, it was both a college prep school and a shop skill training school.

Mechanic Arts high was on Dalton street, overlooking the Boston and Albany train yards in the Back Bay. When the Prudential Center was built, Mechanic Arts/Boston Tech moved to Roxbury, although the building was not actually taken for the project.
Note: all photos are from the City of Boston Archive Flickr photo group.
